In the wake of the January 6 attack on the Capitol, leading public figures in some of the country's biggest cities vowed to remove Donald Trump name signs from buildings in an attempt to disassociate from the former president.

In the immediate aftermath of the riot, then New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chicago Alderman Gilbert Villegas were among those who pushed to have Trump's name stripped from his flagship hotels and other businesses in their cities.

While their attempts have ultimately proven fruitless—Chicago's 96-story Trump Tower still remains and there are ongoing legal battles in New York—other landmarks have been successful in their attempts to distance themselves from Trump after he allegedly incited his supporters to attack the Capitol.

Below, Newsweek has compiled a number of examples where Trump signs have been removed or buildings bearing his name changed in the wake of the Capitol attack.

Trump Parc Stamford

In February 2021, a luxury apartment condo tower in Connecticut removed Trump's name from the front of the building after the condo board voted 7-0 to have it taken down, reported the Stamford Advocate.

Around 75 percent of residents backed the calls for Trump's name to be removed from the building. In July of that year, the tower officially changed its name from Trump Parc Stamford to Park Tower Stamford.

"This was an owner-led effort to rebrand and refresh our building's identity," said Paul McDowell, president of the condominium's association of owners, reported Patch.

Trump Tower at City Center in Westchester

The Trump Tower at City Center in White Plains, on the outskirts of New York, is set to change tis name.

Nearly 70 percent of residents voted to drop Trump from the name, with many citing the January 6 attack as the reason, reported The Real Deal.

News 12 Westchester reported in August that a new name for the building is still to be chosen, and it could take several months for it to officially change.

Trump Plaza in West Palm Beach, Florida.

In January 2021, the condo board of Trump Plaza in West Palm Beach unanimously voted to remove the ex-president's name from the apartment tower in West Palm Beach.

In May, the tower was simply renamed The Plaza following a vote by residents.

"The residents preferred a name for the condo that was generic, low-key and didn't attract attention of any kind," Jeff Barr, president of the condo association, told the West Palm Beach Post. "Our original name of 'The Plaza' filled that need."

The 'Trump Plaza' sign that used to be at the base of the complex had previously been removed amid the Black Lives Matter protests in June 2020, but the building was still officially named after the former president.

Elsewhere, a number of hotels will also no longer bear the former president's name for reasons unrelated to the January 6 attack.

In Washington there are plans for Trump's name to be removed from his flagship hotel near the White House, Trump International Hotel.

However, this name change is more due to the lease being sold to CGI Merchant Group for $375 million following reports the business had been hemorrhaging money for years.

In December, the Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver, which had closed in August 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, removed its sign from the building amid plans to reopen as a Paradox Hotel later this year.

In New York, there were reports that de Blasio's vow to completely remove Trump's name from buildings would cost taxpayers $30 million.

De Blasio also canceled contracts The Trump Organization had with the Wollman and Lasker skating rinks in Central Park, and the Trump Ferry Point Golf Course in the Bronx.

The dispute has continued for more than a year, with Trump's company filing lawsuits and injunctions to fight the cancellation of the contracts it had with the city. Trump's name remains featured on the golf course's signs.

Wollman Rink and Lasker Rink in Central Park removed the president's name from the facilities' signs in 2019.

Also in November 2021, a highway sign near West 79th Street on the West Side Highway in New York which bore Trump's name was removed following long-running complaints and frequent vandalism.

The sign in west Manhattan was paid for by the Trump Organization but New York State Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal had called for its removal, accusing Trump of using "violent rhetoric to stoke fear and breed division."
